In about the year 500AD, Saint Columba secretly copied a gospel belonging to Saint Finnian. When Finnian discovered what had happened, he claimed ownership of the copy, which Columba refused. Both men agreed that Diarmuid, the King of Ireland should act as a judge in the dispute. Diarmuid mac Cearrbheoil, the high king ruled by analogy le gach bó a buinín agus le gach leabhar a chóip, to every cow its calf and to every book its copy. Accordingly the copy belonged to Finnian, the owner of the original manuscript. Unfortunately, Saint Columba’s reaction was not very saintly. He disputed the judgement and encouraged the northern Uí Néill clan to go to war against Diarmuid. Diarmuid was defeated in the battle of Cúl Dreimhne at the foot of Benbulben. |
